What Is IELTS?

We have been receiving a lot of questions regarding the nature of IELTS and its details.  Here’s a first installment of what it is all about, and where you can find further information about it.

WHAT IS IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System  (IELTS) Examination can be taken in over 100 different countries in the world.  It is primarily designed to  assess the readiness of candidates to study or train in further or higher education courses held in English at college or university, or for employment and immigration purposes.

THE SUB-TESTS
The IELTS Exam is divided into 4 sub-tests :  Listening  (40 minutes), Reading (1 hour), Writing (1 hour) and Speaking (15 minutes).

THE TWO MODULES
The Academic Module.  The results of the Academic Module may be used to determine a candidate’s suitability for study at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
The General Training Module.  The General training Module is suitable for candidates wishing to continue their studies at diploma level only.  This is also used for immigration purposes to Canada, Australia or New Zealand, and for students who wish to complete their secondary education in an English-speaking country.

WHERE TO TAKE THE TEST ?
In the Philippines, there are two offices which serves as IELTS Administration Centres – the British Council and IDP Australia, which holds offices in  Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos City, Iligan, Iloilo, Laoag, Legaspi, Leyte, Naga and  Zamboanga.   For further information, go to www.ielts.org.

HOW ARE YOU GRADED?
You cannot pass or fail the IELTS examination.  The office  which required you to take the IELTS exam will inform you of the overall IELTS Band Score they need to facilitate your papers for study, employment or immigration.

You will be given a mark between 0-9  for each of the sub-tests.  Your Overall Band Score is an average of the 4 Subtest Band Scores, with fractional scores rounding up or down to the nearest  x.0  or x.5 score.

Therefore, if you score     6.5 in the Listening Sub-test
                                                            5     in the Reading Sub-test
                                                            7     in the Writing Sub-test
                                                            6     in the Speaking Sub-test
                                                       _____
                                                        24.5   divided by 4  =   6.125

Your Overall Band Score is  6.0
